Abteilungsbeschreibung / Description of UZH unit

S3IT is a core unit at the University of Zurich and part of the Information Technology Department with the ambitious goal of supporting research use of IT across this university. This includes providing services in high-performance and cloud computing, data management, software development and higher-level functions related to computing and data interpretation. In particular, we build and operate large scale cloud infrastructures and several High Performance Computing (HPC) platforms to support research for the entire university, including GPU and large memory clusters, as well as facilitating access to Piz Daint, the world’s third largest Supercomputer.

Our technology stack currently includes Openstack, Ceph, Elasticsearch/Logstash/Kibana (ELK), Check_MK, CFEngine 3, MariaDB with Galera, Pacemaker/Corosync, Ubuntu, SLURM, MPI. We use Python to automate the services. We are proponents of free/open-source software; much of what we develop is publicly available from our github repository: http://github.com/uzh/

Aufgabenbereich / Responsibilities

We are looking for a full-time system administrator to join our IT Systems team. You have a solid grasp of Linux system administration and you are looking to expand your skills to cloud and high-performance computing infrastructures. Your tasks will include the day-to-day operation of our OpenStack, Ceph and HPC clusters as well as assisting in the design and deployment of new systems.

You will be working in a fast-paced scientifically focused environment. You are well organized and have the skills to work in a small dynamic team to bridge Research & Development, and reliable operations of critical services. You can interact with customers, colleagues and vendors to solve problems. You actively look for new challenges and you can solve them independently even while under pressure.

Anforderungen / Qualifications

You are expected to be able to demonstrate working experience in all the following:
- Linux systems administration (particularly Ubuntu)
- Networking (routing, VLANs, DNS, DHCP, etc.)
- Shell (e.g., Bash) scripting
- Version control systems (e.g., git, mercurial, subversion, etc.)

Experience in any of the following will be considered an advantage:
- OpenStack
- Ceph
- Configuration Management Systems (e.g., CFEngine, Puppet)
- Batch Queue Systems (e.g., slurm)
- Python Programming

Sprachkenntnisse / Language requirements

A good command of written and spoken English is mandatory. German language fluency will be considered a strong advantage.
