Our research activities include basic, translational, and clinical research in the field of dermatology, including skin cancer, inflammatory skin disorders and allergy. In part, the research is focused on pathogenesis and diagnosis of disease, but also on therapy. Especially strong interested and expertise have developed in the field of immunotherapy of dermatological disorders. The department is accordingly well equipped for research utilising tissue cultures and small animals with methods of molecular biology, immunology, histology, as well as bioinformatics.
Aufgabenbereich / Responsibilities
The appointed PhD student will conduct experimental research on all aspects of cancer immunotherapy utilising a novel method called Photochemical internalisation (PCI), which combines vaccination and photodynamic therapy. The work is done in close collaboration with researchers from the Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences at ETH Zurich who provide help in formulation of particulate vaccines, e.g. liposomes, and a biotech partner. The PhD student will be developing and testing vaccines in tissue cultures and in mice, and she/he will be using immunological and molecular assessment methods in vitro and in vivo, e.g. FACS, ELISA, immunohistochemistry, immunofluorescence microscopy, PCR and WB. The project is supported by the Swiss National Science foundation, University of Zurich, and a biotech partner.

Anforderungen / Qualifications
The candidate must hold a Master’s degree in biology, biochemistry, biotechnology, pharmacy or in an equivalent field. The candidate will be ambitious, creative, and highly motivated, with an outstanding record of academic achievement as evidenced by first class undergraduate/Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees, academic awards, experience in an experimental research laboratory, etc. Ideal candidates will have strong laboratory and organisation skills, have practical experience into some of the required methods, including cell culture techniques, for instance during an research internship. The work involves and animals. Full training will be provided but prior experience is an advantage.
Sprachkenntnisse / Language requirements
Successful candidates will have excellent English language skills (written and oral). Ideal candidates will also be fluent in German.
